ACV downscales high resolution images (more then 1600px wide)
  • dardar September 2010
I have an Acer Liquid S100. It has 800x480 display resolution.
While reading comics I sometimes encounter double page images more than 1600 pixels wide.
Viewing them on my Desktop PC doesn't cause any trouble.
But ACV seems to downscale image by 50% width and 50% height first and then shows result.
Even when I try to select “Actual Size” in zoom menu nothing happens. After zooming in I obviously see that the image have been downscaled because I can't read some text bubbles. They are blurry!

Is it possible to show full sized images without downscaling?

    Hi Dar.

That is correct. The current version of Droid Comic Viewer supports images up to 800x1200. If the image has a bigger resolution, it downscales it to fit 800x1200.

This is because many Android devices can't handle bigger images without crashing.

The next update will include a setting to define the maximum resolution. This will allow users of newer and more powerful devices to set a bigger value.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to the next update.

It'll be convenient if maximum resolution setting also will have an option to not scale at all regardless of an image dimensions.

Some downscaling will be always needed. Android apps have very limited memory to use, even if the device has plenty.

    Hi,

First, good job for ACV, it's the better Comics reader I tested on my device.

I have the same problem with 1200x1600 images, they are downscaled 2 times while 1150x1500 are not.

I'm using a Toshiba Folio 100 with a 1024x600 resolution in landscape mode and 512 MB of RAM.

I find strange that same images are resized too in Android Gallery application.

I'm waiting for your next update, thanks :)

@kervala Downscaling is a necessary evil on mobile devices. With a maximum resolution setting you will be able to set a value according to your device.

However, bear in mind that it's the maximum app memory that counts, not the total RAM.

Version 1.3.11 now allows to set the maximum resolution from Settings > Advanced.

I'm new to the Android OS and am using the newest build on a Motorola Xoom, is there any way for users to set the maximum app memory manually?

Howdy, Stranger!
